In Times of War

After 5 succesful shows at Nani Arena and Opus, Harlequin’s latest Production “In Times of War” will now feature at Ranga Shankara on the 20th, 21st and 22nd May, 2005.

The evening comprises of two 35 minute plays based on Wartime scenes.

Both plays are original scripts and premier productions.

The first play, called ‘Ek Kadam ka Faasla’, is a Hindi play written by Kunal Sharma (Mumbai) and set in an imaginary war between India and Pakistan. An intense, topical play that has a twinge of strangely dry humour, it tells the story of two warring soldiers who find themselves caught for the night in a trench in no man’s land. Each soldier serves to portray the ideals and perceptions of his own country andarmy…resulting in a lot of cursing, fist-fighting and some penetrating insights into the psyche of the soldier and his love for his country.

The second play, called ‘The Army doesn’t Need You’, is written by Bangalore based Ajay Krishnan and plays as companion and counter to the earlier play. Set in any war between any two countries and at any time, it is a satirical, blackly humorous take on all things war-like. It fearlessly takes apart the ideals of courage, patriotism and leadership and teamwork and forces one to look at things with a jarringly, all-too-real perspective.

The plays, under the collective title of ‘In Times of War’, have been directed by Vivek Madan and feature
Munish Sharma and Raza Hussain.

Tickets at rs. 100/- will be available at Crosswords, Opus, Supermarket (Brig Rd) and at the venue.

The play is written by Swadesh Deepak (Recipient of 2004 Sangeet Natak Academey Award) and directed by Mathura Kalauni.

Synopsis: A serious crime in the armed forces of the country is punished through a Court Martial. A soldier commits a murder which is different from killing the enemy in war. The murder is committed under extreme provocation. The case is open and shut. But there lurks the truth. The frustration, the age old social deprivation gets expressed in the murder of an army officer.

Even after 57 years of Independence the colonial hangover raises its ugly head in some dark corners of our society. The truth is not always what we see or hear.

Kalayan is bringing to the discerning audience a hard hitting play on the system.

For Bookings please call Harsha on 9448856356

Tickets are available at: Supermarket – Brigade Road, K.C. Das – Church Street and 3 days before the show at Ranga Shankara

Arundhati Raja underplays her role, speaking under her breath…making her sound gentle, but cold, and urging the audience to sympathise with her plight.
Laxmi Chandrashekar in The Hindu.

The many struggles… is rendered well by Raja. …internal conflict, feelings of love, bitterness and passive aggressiveness bubble forth in the tight narrative.
Jayalakshmi Menon in The Asian Age.
